Luke 7, Part 2

Scripture: Luke 7:11-17

Observation: On His way to Nain Jesus comes upon a very sad funeral procession. A widow has lost her only son. In the culture of the day, this was financially catastrophic. The widow would have no way to support herself and would have to live off charity. Jesus feels compassion and raises her son from the dead. The crowds see the parallel between Jesus and the prophets, like Elijah and Elisha.

Application: Jesus saw situations each day that were worthy of compassion. But He didn't stop there - He did something about it. Granted, I can't raise anyone from the dead. But I can show compassion by helping those in need.

Prayer: Father, this is an area I really need help with. I can see a situation, feel terrible about it, but not know what to do. Sometimes I think about it after the fact, which is frustrating. Other times I hear people's ideas and wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?" Help me to put my compassion in action. Even if it just means lending a hand or an ear, show me ways to help others who are going through tough times and in this way bring glory to You. In Christ Jesus, Amen.
