Luke 5, Part 1

Scripture: Luke 5:1-11

Observation: Jesus is teaching the crowds from Simon Peter's boat. Jesus tells Peter to bring down the nets. Though they'd caught nothing all night, Jesus's words and teachings impacted Peter so much he went ahead and dropped the nets, catching enough fish to fill two boats. He immediately realized this was the Lord, and asked Jesus to get away from him, a sinful man (v. 8). But Jesus chose him and the sons of Zebedee for His ministry.

Application: Jesus has a calling for each of us. We may not know what it is, or understand it once it's revealed. But Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. Once Peter knew his calling, he left his boat to follow Jesus. Am I willing to do the same?

Prayer: Lord, You have called me, I believe, to teach children. While I hate talking to crowds, I can stand before these kids and teach them Your Word. I realize this must come from You, because I wouldn't have chosen to do this on my own. I also know this may not be all You call me to do. May my heart be open and willing to accept whatever task is at hand, and may I only do it for Your glory, not mine. In Christ Jesus' name, Amen.
